A Talk on Laity Sunday

Ladera Community Church, October 2005

I saw a movie this week, Good Night and Good Luck. It’s about Edward R. Murrow, the CBS broadcaster, and his team during the McCarthy era. You should see it. It reminds a person of what it means to be an American. When I saw it, I had already written the umpteenth draft of this sermon, but after I left the  theater, I marched along El Camino wondering if I had done the best job I could in preparing what I had to say for today or if I had worried too much about keeping everyone happy. Someone once said that if everyone likes you, something must be wrong. I don’t know if that’s true, but it’s releasing, isn’t it? It gives you room to be yourself, to try to speak your best truth. And that’s what I’ll try to do this morning.
